The South African music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) has introduced its new online booking system that allows individual Composers and Publishers to book appointments for both online as well as in-person consultations. This new system is made to bring a more efficiency to the collection management organisation (CMO) that aims to cut out walk-in clients.
Why The System Was Launched
By introducing the online system it helps track and manage user interactions and definitely needed a better system than Happy Fox which did not clear enough tickets to be effective for an online system. SAMRO has the most of clients across the CMOs and definitely needed a system that will manage that but in all honestly limits the more rural or sparsely connected to the internet users. SAMRO has also worked to ensure more frequent distributions to ensure composers get paid timeously for their registered works.

THE JOURNEY: FROM ANNUAL TO FREQUENT DISTRIBUTIONS
In the past, SAMRO paid out distributions once a year for each distribution category, such as Television, Radio and General, Live, Film, and Foreign, while the MIT (Mobile and Internet Transmission) category was paid quarterly already. Supplementary distributions, such as post-distribution adjustments, were also made. While this approach served its purpose, we recognised that it was time for a change to encourage a sustainable ecosystem through frequent royalty distributions.
In 2023, SAMRO successfully implemented a transformative initiative to enhance the royalty distribution process, increasing the number of distributions from 15 in 2022 to 21 in 2023, and further expanding to 29 distributions in 2024, reflecting a continued commitment to efficiency and timely royalty payments. This shift away from the previous model of annual distributions across categories such as television, radio, live music, cinema and foreign royalties reflects SAMRO’s commitment to providing members with more timely, efficient, and consistent earnings.
SAMRO encourages all members to consistently visit our website at www.samro.org.za for the most up-to-date distribution schedule. Any changes to the distribution timelines will also be communicated.
