In a landmark moment for South African football, Amajita, the South African under-20 national football team, win their first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. Amajita defeated Morocco 1–0 in the final on 18 May 2025 at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.
South Africa’s Amajita Win U20 AFCON for the First Time
This win is historic not only for Amajita but for the nation as a whole. It marks the first time South Africa has lifted the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy, a significant milestone in the country’s footballing journey.
The win also serves as redemption for the 1997 final, in which Amajita lost to the same opponent. Nearly three decades later, the team showcased remarkable growth, determination, and tactical maturity.
The Winning Goal: Kekana Delivers the Decisive Strike
The match’s only goal was scored in the 70th minute by midfielder Gomolemo Kekana, who latched onto a pinpoint assist from goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe. The long-range distribution caught Morocco’s defence off-guard, allowing Kekana to slot home a powerful finish that secured the title.
Individual Brilliance and Awards for Amajita’s AFCON Win
Several Amajita players were recognised for their exceptional performances during the tournament:
- Tylon Smith was named Player of the Tournament, demonstrating world-class defensive skills and composure.
- Fletcher Smythe-Lowe was awarded Best Goalkeeper, having kept a clean sheet in the final and delivering crucial saves throughout the competition.
- Coach Raymond Mdaka received the Best Coach award, lauded for his tactical awareness, leadership, and calm under pressure.
A Testament to Youth Development in South Africa
Many of the players who featured in this victorious campaign emerged from South Africa’s DStv Diski Challenge, the country’s premier youth development league. Their success illustrates the importance of grassroots football development and the potential of home-grown talent.
This AFCON victory also shows how strategic investment in youth academies and football infrastructure is paying dividends for the national team setup.
National Celebrations and Looking Ahead
Amajita returned to a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport, with celebrations echoing across the country. President Cyril Ramaphosa publicly congratulated the team, stating that they had “made the nation proud and put South Africa back on the map of African football.”
In addition to winning the tournament, the team has now qualified for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup set to take place in Chile later this year. Expectations are high, and the world will be watching as Amajita prepare to represent Africa on the global stage.
